TEN THINGS I LOVE ABOUT NIGERIAN FOOD.

Wow. It seems like I took a couple of months hiatus on this series. In my defense, I went back home to Naija for a couple of weeks, which brings me to part 6 of my series, 10 Things I Love About Naija – Naija Food.

There is food, and there is Naija food. Most of us can agree to that. I went to restaurant in Abuja, and casually ordered semovita and onugbu(bitterleaf) soup. What I saw on my table 15 minutes later was just outstanding. Nice smooth semovita that looked like it was customized for my tongue, and a bowl of onugbu soup that has so much meat, chicken, stock fish, kpomo, and shaki in it that it looked like a festival of meat & fish was happening in that bowl. The soup was no longer fluid, because the meats, and fish in it had turned it to some kind of meat porridge… Chei…. lol. Before anyone could say jack robinson, I loosened my belt, washed my hands in the “washing hand bowl,” and descended on that semovita with “iwe.” Afterwards, I drank my cold bottle of small stout, looked to my friend while picking my teeth with a toothpick, and said (in a thick naija accent) “This is what life is all about…. The enjoyment of satisfaction.” I sat there for about 10 minutes just wishing I could replay the past 10-15 mins over and over again, plus I had to wait a little bit before moving because my stomach was stretched to its limit from the eating festival. Writing this sef has made me hungry.
One of the advantages of having so many tribes in Naija, is that you get to come in contact with numerous cultures, and with that you get to eat their food at some point or another if you live in naija. I grew up in the north, and so suya, tuwo, alibasa, massa, kunu, fura de nono, etc were northern foods I ate all the time. Those in south west i.e. Yoruba folks have their beautiful amala, fufu, ewedu soup, etc and Igbos gather their isi ewu, ofe nsala, ofe onugbu, akpu (for energy), okpa, abacha n ukpaka etc. Benin and their banga soup… South south with their edikaikon soup(spellcheck), and roasted fish and plaintain. I mean I can go on and on with food and their cultural origin, but I’ll leave it at that. I think folks get my point. We even have naija food now that is so engrained in naija food culture that not many people can trace which tribe started eating what first or what tribe is known for it. Plaintain (in all forms), garri, moi-moi, akara, jellof rice, fried rice, akamu, egusi soup, okra soup are all foods that I personally think should be classified as naija food. All these are so nigerian that I’m not sure one tribe can lay absolute claim to it. Ahhhh…. the beauty of naija.
Let’s not forget our fruits and vegetables; Udala/Agbalumo, Ube, Mango, Cashews, Paw paws, Garden Egg, etc or our snacks; Chin-Chin, Puff Puff, Meat Pie, roasted groundnut, roasted corn etc. Kai…Wahali we are blessed with food in that country. Why do we even bother to import food in that country? Anyways, let me not digress.
In conclusion Naija food is one of the reasons why I can’t afford not to be a Naija person. I no fit chop burger, pizza, burritos, chinese food, italian food etc till I die. Besides the fact that I’ll gain weight like a pig, the food is not customized for my tongue like my semovita is abeg. I want to be able to eat my pounded yam, and ofe nsala when I want to… eat my balango suya as a snack, or chop roasted plantain and fish in the evening… eat my ube and coconut, or drink garri and groundnut with cold water (my african cereal…lol)… eat jellof rice with fried plantain when I feel like forming small ajebo… Ok I need to stop cos I’m hungry now…lol. So there goes, Naija food; One of the 10 Things I Love About Naija.

Justin Bieber has done what millions of people do when they hear his music .. puked.

Bieber is in the Philippines this week and was ill before his show last night but still went ahead with the show. He had to regularly go to the side of stage and vomit during the performance.

He tweeted later, 'even when im sick feels good to come on here and see the love. Gonna rest up and hope to get better. ITHANKYOU'.

Yesterday, the Bieb was getting into a twit fight with CSI star Marg Helgenberger after she called him a 'Brat' on French radio this week. He also had a dig at the media for reporting about him being a naughty boy on a Qantas flight last week.

Whitney Houston was banned from a series of Prince concerts before being admitted to rehab.

The 47-year-old singer - who has a history of substance abuse issues ' was reportedly told not to attend anymore of the pop legend's shows after she appeared "intoxicated" at every concert she went to in the run-up to her entering a treatment facility to seek help for her addictions.

According to gossip website TMZ, organisers eventually grew tired with Whitney's demands after she pestered them for free tickets and then demanded to be let up on stage with the 'Purple Rain' singer.

An insider revealed: "They didn't want her to embarrass herself."

After eventually being banned from the gigs due to her increasingly "erratic behaviour", Whitney voluntarily entered an out-patient rehab program around 10 days ago.

Her spokesperson recently confirmed: "Whitney Houston is currently in an out-patient rehab programme for drug and alcohol treatment.

"Whitney voluntarily entered the programme to support her long-standing recovery process."

The treatment programme reportedly allows the singer ' who was pictured at a Prince concert last weekend - to leave the facility, as long as she is accompanied by a monitor.

Storyline

Leonard Hofstadter and Sheldon Cooper are both brilliant physicists working at Cal Tech in Pasadena, California. They are colleagues, best friends and roommates, although in all capacities their relationship is always tested primarily by Sheldon's regimented and non-conventional ways. They are also friends with their Cal Tech colleagues, mechanical engineer Howard Wolowitz and astrophysicist Rajesh Koothrappali. The foursome spend their time working on their individual work projects, playing video games, watching science fiction movies or reading comic books. As they are self-professed nerds, all have little or no luck with "popular" women. When Penny, a pretty woman and an aspiring actress originally from Omaha, moves into the apartment next to Leonard and Sheldon's, Leonard has another aspiration in life, namely to get Penny to be his girlfriend. Trivia

Penny was an add-on from a different sitcom concept. She had been originally envisioned as "Katie",a more cynical, hard drinker, street-wise girl who worked at a makeup saloon. In the original unaired pilot, she was played by Amanda Walsh. See more »

Goofs

Revealing mistakes: In the opening credits, when it shows the cast eating Chinese food, the half-cut cardboard box shows the name, Kart-Out, with a 1-800 number. A visible marker is used over the real brand name, Kari Out, with a 800 number. See more »

Beauty or blasphemy? Swimsuit depiction of Lakshmi sparks Indian outrage

The swimwear featuring Hindu goddess Lakshmi that will never go on sale. (Picture AFP/Getty Images)
The swimsuit featuring Indian goddess Lakshmi at Australian Fashion Week 2011 will never make it to the stores after protests across India saw photographs of the design and the Australian national flag burned.Lakshmi was plastered on the backside of a model's swimwear and was reported in Indian media, sparking outrage.
Members of the Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party burned Australia's national flag during a protest in southern Hyderabad on the weekend. In north-western Armritsar, Punjabis took to the streets for prolonged protests.
The design has been condemned by the president of the Federation of Australian Indian Associations, Vish Viswanathan.
He told “The Daily Telegraph” the designs “hurt and offended the Hindu community worldwide, including over 200,000 Indians living in Australia.”
“It is difficult for me to believe it's unintentional,” Viswanathan said. “Why would someone do something like that unless they wanted some attention?”
He said it will further deteriorate views of Australia in India.
Designer Lisa Burke has previously lived in India, so many believe she should have known the swimsuit depiction of the popular goddess of wealth and prosperity was inappropriate.
Smh.com.au reports she has apologized to the Hindu community and posted an apology on her Facebook page: "We would like to offer an apology to anyone we may have offended and advise that the image of Goddess Lakshmi will not appear on any piece of Lisa Blue swimwear for the new season, with a halt put on all production of the new range and pieces shown on the runway from last week removed. This range will never be available for sale in any stockists or retail outlets anywhere in the world.”
She says on the company’s website: "'Lisa Blue' represents the girl of the future who can be sexy, beautiful, powerful and environmentally aware at the same time."
An smh.com.au online poll found that 46 percent found the design beautiful, 17 percent attractive, 14 percent in poor taste and 23 percent offensive.
